Pisa

The morning after our wet adventure in Cinque Terre dawned a little brighter and much dryer as we headed for the train station and a day in Pisa before continuing on to Florence. There were no travel issues and we arrived on time. We checked our bags at the train station so we didn't have to lug them around all day. On our tour of the city, we saw a Medici Palace-turned park-
- took in the views along the river -
and found the remains of a Roman public bath.

Of course, the main attraction was the leaning tower and it really is spectacular - even with the scaffolding around one level.

Pisa is like any other medieval city, with narrow streets and close buildings, but the cathedral complex is this huge open area with grassy lawns around the duomo (cathedral) -
baptistery -
and, of course, the tower itself.
It was really beautiful. After taking pictures of the tower at every angle imaginable, including some goofy ones-
- we went inside the cathedral. Thank goodness pictures were allowed. It was easily one of the most beautiful churches we saw, including St. Peters in Vatican City.

We spent a long time admiring the paintings and sculptures before taking in the sights at the university piazza -

- and picking up a late lunch on our way back to the train station. We got our bags, and hopped on our train to Florence as it pulled into the station right on time.
